Havelock Park has been the scene of both tragedy and triumph. On Friday the rugby team of St. Peter’s College ensured there was room only for triumph and proved they were as tough as nails as they battled mud and rain to beat the most improved team this season, Kingswood College 20-10.

The Peterites won in the absence of their two play-makers centre Raveen Fernando, nicknamed “kadiya” for his slicing runs, and the bubbly scrum half Jason Dissanayake.

There was a stage when Kingswood threatened to take the match away from the Peterites when they went in for the break at 7-7.

But the Peterites certainly savoured the challenge and relished the added motivation Kingswood gave them and secured the result with a spectacular 30-metre rolling maul that ended in a try near the goal post.

On Saturday May 26 the Peterites are listed for a showdown against arch foe St. Joseph’s College at the CR and FC ground Longden Place in a match that none will want to miss.

The Joes have taken their rugby to a modern-day requirement while the Peterites have only traditional pride to go by.
