Kandy SC holds AGM

The AGM of Kandy SC is expected to take place in the last week of June with Mahesh Weerasinghe tipped to come in as president.

Malik Samarawickrema is currently credited with being the man who lifted Kandy Sports Club to its present standard through his knowledge and experience, a disciplinarian who knows the game well.

Bradby Rugger Ball

Folks in Kandy paid a tribute to M. Suleimen for coming up with a good souvenir design that chronicled several articles connected to the Bradby match between the rugby teams of Royal College and Trinity College.

Marija coach, Dharmapala captain

Fazil Marija who retired from representing Kandy SC for 15 years has been appointed as coach of the team for next month’s inter club Sevens tournament while Richard Dharmapala has been named as captain.

The Sevens will be worked off at the Race Course ground in Colombo on June 2 and 3.

Fifteen-a-side coach Sean Wijesinghe and his assistant coach Saliya Kumara will assist Marija.

Duncan White remembered

Sri Lanka’s first medal winner at the Olympic Games, the late Duncan White was remembered on his birthday here in Kandy where he schooled at Trinity College. He won the Trinity Lion for athletics. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1949.

Trinity and Mahamaya do well

Trinity College and Mahamaya Girls College emerged as the overall champions in the Central Zone athletics meet which took place at the Bogambara stadium.

Swarnamali BMV and Girls High School were placed second and third in the girls segment while in the boys category, St. Sylvester’s College and Dharmaraja College took second and third places respectively.

Gateway boys champs, girls runners-up

Kandy’s Gateway College basketball team won the boys under-20 Central Provincial tournament while their girls team ended runners-up in the championship worked off at St. Anthony’s Convent court.

The teams were coached by Anuradha Wijesinghe and Hasanthika Dharmawardane respectively.

Indrajith Bandara, Daham Tennakoon, Seshith Ariyawansa, Akaash Kathirvel, Navindu Weerasinghe and Dineth Ullandupitiya were some of the players who excelled in the boys’ team while Shabnam Shameel, Sewmini Wijetunga, Fathima Zuharia, Jody Mentel, Anjali Ullandupitiya, Shenali Jayaweera and Adithi Fernando shone for the girls.

Amidon no more

Tuan Amidon who was called the Golden Boy for his top football dribbling and youthful success on the field, passed away last Tuesday and his Janaza took place in Kandy at Mahiyawa. He was 83 and a bachelor to his death.

Amidon started his football career at Gandhi College Kandy and later played for Young Wanders Sports Club, Kandy and from there he crossed over to Colombo and played for Black Square.

He later joined the Army and played for nearly 20 years. He also played for Army as a rugby fly-half.

He wore the football jersey for Sri Lanka.
