The Mayor of Kandy, Kessara Senanayake is planning to launch ‘Sport Unites’ an innovative new programme that uses sport to boost social integration, increase participation and improve the physical and mental health of people.

The Mayor believes sport is a powerful tool for social change and can be used to address a range of issues facing communities. It can support the development of essential life skills, develop confidence and improve self-esteem. Hillwood Girls to promote tennis

Hillwood College which is over 125 years, is a prestigious private girls’ school situated in the heart of Kandy. This school was one of the first to play tennis after the game was introduced by the British in 1915. They have one of the best tennis courts situated on a picturesque hill just above the Kandy Lake.

The tennis court is celebrating its centenary this year and their sporting principal Nelum de Alwis is keeping the sport alive with the support of the old girls.

Cue not chalked the proper way

Many people do not realize that there is a proper way to chalk the cue. For the past eight years cue sport (Billiards and Snooker) has been in the drain over here in Kandy except for the Mahanuwara YMA the only club which keeps the game going while the other clubs use the cue room as their store room and when they need the liquor license, it is said that they play the cue game.

Today club cue rooms are in the dark and only Parlors are in the game. At the AGM of the national body held last Saturday Faise Samad who was vice president for a couple of years was this time shifted as the Vice Patron. He says the Association jacked up the fees and no club is paying and this time M. Sally has been brought in as one of the vice presidents while his son has been made Kandy’s organizer.
