One of the oldest schools in the country, Sri Jayawardenapura MV (earlier known as Christian College) has organized a ‘Japurians Walk -2018’ to mark its 196th anniversary on June 9 at 2.00 pm.

The walk will start from the school premises and it will proceed along Bangala Junction, Pitakotte Junction, Jubilee Post, turn right to Nugegoda Colour Lights, Nawala Road, Weli Para, Pagoda Road, Pitakotte Junction and back to the school ground.

Western Province Chief Minister Isura Devapriya and State Minister of National Policies and Economic Affairs Dr. Harsha de Silva will be the chief guests.

The Principal of the school, teachers, parents, students, old boys and well wishers will join the parade. The school’s Old Boys Association has taken steps to conduct a musical show after the parade.

The principal, Major DAD Wanaguru and teachers have come forward to bring the school to a higher standard through development of education, sports and other extra-curricular activities. Last year a great achievement of the school was obtaining good results at the GCE O/L examination in the Sri Jayawardenapura area.

The school was formerly known as Christian College until 1964 when the administration of the school was taken over by the government. The school traces its roots to 1822 when the Cotta Institute was established as a seminary for young Ceylonese of which the first principal was Rev. Samuel Lambrick.

The school has produced great persons in various fields in the 196 year history such as Anagarika Dharmapala, Founder of Tower Hall Foundation John de Silva, Founder of Sri Lanka National Anthem Ananda Samarakoon, Senator A. Ratnayake, leader of Anti-alcohol Movement Soloman Wilfred Fernando and Professor C.R. Paanabokke.
