Fruits | Sunday Observer

Fruits are an important part of our diet. Different countries have their own varieties of fruits. For example, fruits like bananas, mangoes, pineapples and papaw which are grown in Sri Lanka also grow in tropical countries. There are also village fruits like guava, narang, jamboo, anoda and veralu.

Apples, grapes and oranges flourish in cool climates mainly in European countries and in Australia and New Zealand. Fruits are used to produce foods such as jam, fruits juices, cordial and pickles. The alcoholic drink wine is made from the juice of grapes. The importance of fruits in a healthy diet is summed up in the popular saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. Fruits are also consumed by innocent animals like birds and squirrels.
