Joes and Mahamaya splash to glory at schools’ swimming

Defending champions St Joseph’s College (498 points) and Mahamaya College Kandy (438 points) continued their dominance on the fourth day of the 45th Milo Schools Swimming Championships at the Sugathadasa complex yesterday.

There was a close battle for the girls between Mahamaya and Visakha Vidyalaya (431) with the final day today.

Lycuem School overcome Ladies College and secured the third place. The Joes were untouchable at this year’s competition, finishing on top of the leader board with 498 points. The real battle, however, is for the silver between Royal College and Ananda College.

In the boys category Ananda College (322 points) continued to hold their second while Royal College (233 points) secured third place respectively.

In the combined team scores list Lyceum International School from Wattala, Nugegoda and Panadura dominated the first three places with their performances.

Some 32 meet records were established at the end of the fourth day as Nabhashi Perera of Sirimavo Bandaranaike impressed by breaking a 14-year long record in the Girls U-13 100m Butterfly and 200m IM events.

Miniruwani Samarakoon set a record time of 1:12.37 minutes in 2004 in the 100m Butterfly.

National champion Dilanka Shehan set a record with his timing of 5:09.82 in the boys U-19 400m Individual Medley event. (KR)
