Poson festival

17 June, 2018

We celebrate Poson in the month of June. It commemorates the day Buddhism was brought to Sri Lanka by Arahath Mahinda, son of Emperor Asoka of India. Arahath Mahinda first visited Sri Lanka on a Poson Full Moon Poya Day at Mihintale or Missakapawwa. At that time Arahath Mahinda met King Dewanampiyatissa who was ruling the country and the king became a buddhist. He understood the value of Buddhism and spread Buddhism among the people. The King built temples, stupas and made Sri Lanka a righteous country.
