Flea proliferation forces school closure

A primary school in the Central Province has been closed for a week following an invasion of unexpected visitors: namely fleas.

The sudden appearance of hordes of fleas at the Talatuoya Primary School situated in a village located in the Kandy District had caused a large number of students to complain of various skin reactions and a scratching sensation in the body, prompting school authorities and parents to bring it to the notice of the health authorities in the district.

The Patha Hewaheta Zonal Director of Education had reportedly ordered the closure of the school on a request from the Principal, for a week.

Thereafter, the Principal had sought the advice of the health authorities . The MOH of the area had, with the help of the Regional Malaria Office Initiated necessary steps to eradicate the flea menace.
