Vijayabahu Motocross flags off today

The flagship motor racing event of the Army’s Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) Vijayabahu Motorcross - 2018’ will kick off along the VIR track in Boyagane, Kurunegala for the 16th consecutive year on today.

There will be over 80 leading drivers along with foreign riders according to Major General Ajith Kariyakarawana, Colonel of the Regiment, addressing a media briefing held at Mirage Hotel, Colombo.

The challenging track at Boyagane, will offer a tough task for all competitors to gain supremacy amid a vast gathering of motor racing fans.

All proceeds raised through this annual event are channelled for the welfare facilities to VIR family members, including family members of fallen and handicapped war heroes.

The Vijayabahu Motocross was organized for the first time in the year 2000 exclusively with riders of the Army, those of Wayamba Province and a few from elsewhere in the country with a view to popularizing the sport and also raising funds for welfare of the members of the Regiment. Last year’s Vijayabahu Motocross saw leading riders in the calibre of Sehan C. Adikari, Ishan Dissanayake, Ivon B. Gurusinghe, Sameera Premarathne, Nihal Wijeratne, Lahiru Jeewantha, Buddika Silva, Jaques Gunawardene, Gayan Sadaruwan in action with foreign riders.

This year too the above named riders will be seen in action fighting for supremacy on the track.

The funds raised from the previous event built a gymnasium and a playground to develop sports activities of officers and other ranks in the regimental premises.
