Although there may be some immediate negative consequences on United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) Resolution 30/1 on Sri Lanka following the US withdrawal from the UNHRC, they would continue to support it and their former Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Ahul Keshap has reiterated it, TNA spokesman M.A. Sumanthiran MP told the Sunday Observer.
The short fall, in relation to the Sri Lankan resolution, created due to the exit of the US now has to be offset by the UK, Canada and the European Union but, nevertheless, the TNA was confident that the US will continue to play a significant role as Athul Keshap has stated, he said. The UN resolution was passed without a vote in 2015 and again in March 2018 and what is noteworthy is that it was voluntarily sponsored by Sri Lanka.
As such the whole world anticipates Sri Lanka to fulfil its obligations on promoting reconciliation, accountability and human right through the implementation of the resolution, he said.
Sumanthiran also said that party leader R. Sampanthan has requested for an appointment with President Maithripala Sirisena to discuss the reported organised settlement of outsiders in the Vanni area and the party would lodge its protest after submitting a detailed document once they get the appointment.
