Ensure N and E youth not canvassed by extremists - Sumanthiran

TNA Parliamentarian M A says that issues in the North and the East must be addressed immediately to ensure that the youth in the area are not easily canvassed by extremists.

Speaking to the Sunday Observer, he said that failure to address such issues in a timely manner will damage the country.

“According to our analysis, first time voters have all gone for more extreme parties, while older sections support the national parties directly,” he said. He further said at a memorial in Mulliwaikkal on May 18, the youth sidelined Northern Chief Minister, Vigneswaran. “Also, ex senior commanders of the LTTE, who are now in the democratic main stream, were physically pushed out of this place by 20-year-olds. We see this as a dangerous trend,” Sumanthiran said. These trends are a result of the Government not keeping the promises made regarding certain demands, including reparations and the new constitution. “This emergent trend has to be tackled via political settlement by bringing out the issue. Otherwise, it will take different forms that will damage the country,” he said. He went on to state that their experiment with nominating C. V Wigneswaran has become a ‘failed experiment’. “During the previous regime Pillan was appointed as the Chief Minister. We did not see this as done in the best interest of the people. Hence we nominated Wigneswaran. He’s educated and a former Supreme Court judge. But this experiment failed massively,” Sumanthiran said. -DA
