Leading racers battle for supremacy at Gunners Super Cross

The Regiment of Sri Lanka Artillery has organized the thirteenth edition of the Gunners Super Cross 2018 scheduled to be held on July 29 at the Artillery Complex in Minneriya.

The Sri Lanka Autosports Drivers Association (SLADA) in association with the Artillery Regiment will conduct this mega racing extravaganza which is considered by all motor racers and spectators as one of the biggest sporting events taking place in the Thamankaduwa region.

Major General ND Wanniarachchi addressing the media stated that the Gunners Super Cross commenced 12 years ago with the aim of raising funds for the welfare of the families of soldiers who paid the supreme sacrifice to safeguard the country’s unitary stature. In addition welfare facilities will be provided to all injured soldiers their families and in-service soldiers to better their lives and working conditions.

The proceeds that were received by the Gunners Super Cross in the past have been used to construct two houses for families who lost their breadwinners, while many other activities in the form of helping injured soldiers’ children in their education. The present soldiers in service too were provided with welfare and sporting facilities to better their careers in the field of sports. “With the support extended the Artillery Regiment was able to produce a few sportsmen to who got the opportunity to represent Sri Lanka at international level”, said Major General Wanniarachchi.

He thanked the sponsors for joining hands with Gunners Super Cross since the inception and noted that it is their support that kept the Gunners Super Cross moving to date.

Singer Sri Lanka has been sponsoring the Gunners Super Cross for ten long years and will continue its sponsorship as the main sponsor while CEAT Kelani International Tyres (Pvt.), TVS Lanka (Pvt.) Ltd. Brown and Company and Ceylon Cold Stores are the co-sponsors this year.

Sanjaya Kariyawansa the President of SLADA said that the club expects a record number of entries as most of the local drivers and riders are keen to race on this track.

Already many entries have been received by the club with more expected and the closing date is July 18.

The Gunners Super Cross will consist of 24 events (Motor Cycles 12, Cars 10 and Jeeps 2). Like in previous years foreign riders are expected to race against the local riders and their participation will be a big challenge for our young riders who are hoping to enter the international racing arena.

Motor racing fans from the North Central Province and around the country will get the opportunity of witnessing the thrills and spills of motor racing on this day.
