We can’t be threatened into joining SLPP – Dayasiri

8 July, 2018

UPFA Kurunegala District MP and former Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara said he will not obtain membership of any other political party but continue his politics with the SLFP.

If any SLFP MP in the Joint Opposition (JO) obtains the membership of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), he will definitely lose his parliamentary seat, MP Jayasekara told the Sunday Observer yesterday.

He said, “They cannot be asked to take SLPP membership by threatening them. We are not ready to succumb to such undue pressure.

I would like to ask whether any SLFP MP in the JO has been given SLPP membership. We can either work in the Joint Opposition (JO) or we would work independently.”

Jayasekera said at present no SLFP MP in the JO has obtained SLPP membership. He challenged any SLFP MP to do so. Having clearly understood the legal position, some are forcing us to obtain SLPP membership.

Did anybody ask Wimal Weerawansa to obtain SLPP membership? he queried. “We cannot be given membership either by force or threats.”

Jayasekara said some JO MPs such as Prasanna Ranatunga say that we have a foot on each side, but we categorically deny that claim.

“I am not ready to go to any temporary political shelters such as the SLPP by leaving my permanent political home - the SLFP,” he said.
