Schools in need of good MICs
Schools in Kandy are badly in need of good Masters in Sports Management to help students think strategically in their existing interests in sports. Today some of the MICs in some sports don’t know their part and often mess things up. Some MICs involved in rugby may say they make an effort to do their part and succeed.
KMC inter-department football
Works Department Special Unit downed the Security Department to win the Kandy Municipal Council inter-department football Sevens which was played at the Welpitiya Rajans playground. Twelve teams were seen in action and a big hand should got to Playgrounds Master Sunil Abeygunasekara.
It was a grand final and at the end of full time the scoreboard read nil all. Even in extra time there was no scoring and the winners were decided on a penalty shoot-out. Works Special Unit beat Water Works Department in the semis while the Security Department beat Fire Brigade Department in the other semi final.
In a hilarious episode Play Grounds Department who lost the first match went missing.
The final was played under the patronage of Mayor Kesara Senanayake who presented the awards.
‘Kastro’ helps Maliyadeva
Ananda Kasthuriarachchi the former Kingswood College and Kandy SC captain did a grand job to have Maliyadeva College promoted to the upper division of the inter-school rugby League 2019.
Kasthuriarachchi is an experienced and prominent figure in the local rugby arena known for his knowledge of the game and discipline. Kastro, as he is fondly known in the rugby circles, coached the 2008 Sri Lanka under-20 team at the Junior Asiad along with Sanath Martis.
Rugby Academies
Today in the central hills there are many rugby academies which have become money-making ventures. Their charges are sky high. When there is a tournament the parents have to spend on traveling and food.
Sri Sumangala enter the final
Sri Sumangala College, earlier known as St. Paul’s College, gave their best in the lower division rugby League and did well to enter the inter-school Premier knock-out tournament final. They went down to Thurstan College in the final after beating Ananda College in the semis. They were expected to do well in the final but failed with a 52-7 loss.
Richard to lead
Richard Dharmapala a top class ruggerite to come out of Science College who led Kandy Sports Club to win the Sevens first leg, will continue as the club’s captain in the League tournament. He led the Sri Lanka under-18 team in the Commonwealth tournament.
Runners-up at LV Jayaweera boxing
Trinity College boxers emerged runners-up and were presented with the DDC Munasinghe Trophy at the recently concluded 45th L.V Jayaweera championship held at the Dheerananda MMV, Pilimathalawa.
The Trinitians were able to take home three ‘Gold’ medals and a ‘Bronze’ medal during the course of the five-day tournament. The winners were Themiya Herath – 39kg-41kg (13-14 years), Waruna Bandara – 41kg-43kg (13-14 years) and Hamdan Faizal – 43kg-45kg (13-14 years). The ‘Bronze’ medal winner was Kamal Denegama – 56kg-60kg (17-18 years).
UAE women practice in Kandy
The UAE women’s rugby team will be in Kandy to do some training. Their training in Kandy will be from July 12 to 15 at Nittawela. The UAE women’s side played in the inaugural six-team Under-18 international Sevens alongside Hong Kong, India, Kazakhstan, Sri Lanka and Uzbekistan in 2016. In rugby the UAE players wear attire to suit Islamic customs.
Hyline out-play Sisu 10-0
Hy Line SC thrashed Sisu SC 10-0 in an FA Cup first round football match played at the Peradeniya Campus ground. The winners totally dominated the match with an excellent display of passing that left Sisu high and dry while taking an 8-0 lead at halftime.
