15 July, 2018

Putting an end to any uncertainty pertaining to the Pohottuwa presidential candidate Former Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has stated in an interview to a Colombo-based Tamil language daily that he will run for the 2020 presidential poll if he was nominated by his sibling former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and take the leadership of the country if elected.

His other sibling, former Economic Affairs Minister, Basil Rajapaksa, who is a prospective candidate, has declined to contest the polls, he has added.

Gotabhaya Rajapakse further states that he is confident that the Tamil-speaking people will also support him this time around since the misconceptions among them that he was a supporter of the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) have dissipated.

“The Muslims will vote for me while the Tamils will vote for Mahinda Rajapaksa, “he has said.

Asked how he would address the national ethnic issue, he said that he would certainly ensure an atmosphere conducive for every citizen to live in peace and dignity. “The Tamils have nothing to worry because Mahinda Rajapaksa has close Tamil relatives within his family circles and he had carried out immense development works for the North and the East after the war ended in May 2009.”
