Death penalty: President stands by his decision

22 July, 2018

Refuting media reports, President Maithripala Sirisena said that he will not backpedal on his decision to reimplement the death penalty he said that he has called the heads of legal, prisons and justice sectors to appoint a committee to decide on how to give effect to the capital punishment.

While addressing the groundbreaking function of the National Nephrology Hospital in Polonnaruwa yesterday, he stated that despite objections on the decision to lift the current moratorium on the death penalty he will see it through.

He further stated that although many had criticized his decision the same people have never done anything to curb crime.

In face of hard local and international requests not to do so, if the decision to end the 42 old moratorium on the death penalty comes to effect Sri Lanka runs the risk of losing GSP Plus.
