79th Colombo-Madras Regatta : Sri Lankans out-row Indian rowers

Sri Lanka’s rowers men and women dominated at the 79th Madras-Colmbo Regatta winning both categories yesterday at the Beira Lake.

In the men’s category the Sri Lankan rowers grabbed 38 points out of 50 to win this Trophy. The women rowers too did well to outclass their opponents winning all events that were worked off to gain maximum 25 points allocated for this category They received the Adayar Trophy which was on for this Class.

Sri Lankan rowers recorded the best time for the main event of the day in the Men’s A Fours finishing the distance of 1000 meters in less than three minutes clocking 2.52 secs. The best time for women was achieved by the Sri Lankans in the A Fours clocking a time of 3.38secs.

Madras’ men rowers won only two events on this day the Men’s A Sculls and Men’s A Double Scull. Their timing for these two events were 3 mts 25 secs and 3mts 08 secs to achieve their victories. The winning Sri Lankan women received the Adayar Trophy.

The captain of the Madras Rowing Club James Joseph former rower who competed two decades ago speaking to the Sunday Observer said Sri Lanka has improved heavily in this sport. He added that the reason for this could be the championships held in Sri Lanka from School Level which is not practiced in Madras. He also said the organizers have done a fine job to conduct this meet in a grand manner. Minister of Sports and Provincial Councils Faizer Musthafa was the chief guest and gave away the Awards.
