29 July, 2018

One of the oldest schools in the country, Sri Jayawardenapura Maha Vidyalaya organised ‘Japurians' Walk -2018’ to mark its 196th anniversary recently.

Western Province Chief Minister Isura Devapriya and State Minister of National Policies and Economic Affairs Dr. Harsha de Silva were the chief guests. The Principal, teachers, parents, students, old boys and well wishers joined the parade. The Old Boys' Association held a musical show after the parade.

The school was formerly known as Christian College until 1964 when the administration of the school was taken over by the government. The school traces its roots to 1822 when the Cotta Institute was established as a seminary for young Ceylonese of which the first principal was Rev. Samuel Lambrick.

The school has produced great persons in various fields in its 196 year history such as Anagarika Dharmapala, founder of Tower Hall Foundation John de Silva, composer of the Sri Lanka National Anthem Ananda Samarakoon, Senator A. Ratnayake, leader of Anti-alcohol Movement Soloman Wilfred Fernando and Prof. C.R. Panabokke.
