Schools volleyball finals on August 3 and 4 at NYSC

The all island schools volleyball championships for the DSI Super Sports Trophy reached its final stage last week when all qualifying rounds came to an end.

This year the tournament saw the participation of 7000 teams from all age groups which is considered the biggest schools sporting event that gives the opportunity to promote the National Sport.

The tournament which has been in existence for over two decades has produced many national players through this tournament. At present the national players representing the country were the players who commenced their volleyball careers through this tournament.

The organizers the Education Department and the sponsor D Samson Industries who pioneered the championship to promote the national sport in Sri Lanka from the grass root level needs a high commendation by sports loving people. The sponsor has donated Trophies to be presented under the name DSI Super Sports Volleyball Champions.

The final two days of the championship will see most of the finalists from rural areas in action. All these schools competed at divisional level, district level and national level to qualify for these finals. It was notable to see teams from far away areas like Ampara, Trincomalee, Hungama and

Puttalam in the finals.

The tournament was played for nearly four months before its final stage of the 2018 Championship. The winners and runners up will receive DSI Super Sports Trophies and Certificates. Teams qualified to play in the finals are as follows:

U-15 Boys St. Xavier’s College, Marawila vs St. Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa

U-17 Rajasinghe MMV Ruwanwella vs St. Xavier’s College, Marawila

U-19 Damissara MMV, Nattandiya vs Rajasinghe MMV, Ruwanwella

Girls:

U-11 Tissapura MV, Ampara vs Siyabalagaswewa Medagama School Anuradhapura

U-13 Royal National School, Trincomalee vs Tissapura Vidyalaya, Ampara

U-15 SanghamittaVidyalaya vs Tissapura MV, Ampara

U-17 Anamaduwa MMV vs Vijayaba National School, Hungama

U-19 Anamaduwa MMV vs Ratanapala Vidyalaya, Mahawewa
