New hope for Antonians

St. Anthony’s College for the forthcoming season has found a new cricket coach in Suneth Gunatilake. According to their cricket loving old boys he is capable of bringing back the school in cricket to its former position. In the last few years though they won a few games, they failed to do well. Cricket was introduced in 1903 and a team known as ‘St. Anthony’s College Cricket Club’ consisting of staff and schoolboys was formed under the captaincy of Fr. Andrew.

The inaugural match was played in Colombo versus Colombo Carlton Cricket Club. One of St. Anthony’s notable rivals is another prestigious Catholic boys’ school St. Joseph’s College, Colombo and they compete for the “Murali-Vaas Trophy”, which was inaugurated in 2007 and named after St. Anthony’s alumnus Muttiah Muralitharan and St. Joseph’s alumnus Chaminda Vaas. In 2012 the two schools celebrated their historic 100th encounter.

U-16 Tens rugby

The All Island under-16 10-a-side inter school rugby tournament has been fixed to be played in Kandy on August 4 and 5 at either Trinity College ground at Palkelle or Kandy SC ground at Nittawela.

Last year Trinity College under the guidance of Thusitha de Silva won the Cup by beating Kingswood College in extra time after the game ended 12-12 at full time and Shehain Sirisoma of Trinity College was the best player of the tournament.

Dharmaraja College managed to pocket the Plate Championship,while St. Joseph’s and D.S Senanayake won the Bowl and Shield respectively.

Level One cricket examination

Some 50 coaches are expected to participate, 20 form Kandy, six from Kegalle and 15 from Nuwara Eliya are expected to do the Level One cricket examination on August 19 and 20 conducted by the Central Province Cricket Association.

It is said that priority will be given to current unqualified school and academic coaches. Applications are available at the KDCA office at Asgiriya.

Trinity at Masters NDB Golf

Trinity College will be one of the schools from Kandy that will be taking part in the NDB Private Wealth Junior Masters Golf Championship 2018 Team Event. Their principal Andrew Fowler-Watt is giving his best of support.

Kandy Sixes postponed

The KDCA’s oldest cricket tournament, the inter club Sixes has been postponed due to the absence of a ground. It was to be played on July 28 at the Police ground. It was to be a 16-team competition.

Ten players from Kandy

A squad of 36 is being named for the Asian Sevens Under-20 competition which will take place in Hong Kong next month. In 2016 Sri Lanka were champs and in 20917 runners-up. The Kandy school products in the squad are P. Hettiarachchi of Vidyartha College, St. Anthony’s players Dinuk Amerasinghe, Jehan Seelagama and Samuel Maduwantha, Trinity College’s Dilusha Dange and Vishwa Ranaraja, Kingswood College’s Lakshitha Ranaweera and Shannon Jansen and Dharmaraja College’s Bawantha Udangamuwa and T. Tharaka.
