Sinhala and Tamil New Year

5 August, 2018

In April, the month of Bak, when the sun moves from the Meena Rashiya (House of Pisces) to the Mesha Rashiya (House of Aries) in the celestial sphere, Sinhalese and Tamils celebrate Aluth Avurudu and Puththandu. It marks the end of the harvest season and coincides with one of the two instances when the sun is directly above Sri Lanka. On the day of yhr celebrations, the sun is directly above Koggala. The Sinhala and Tamil new year dawns on the time based on astrological signs.
