Tensions that were mounting in the Nayaru fishing village in Mullaitivu since last Monday following the burning of eight wadiyas belonging fishermen of the area have subsided after the boats and fishing gear of the migrant fishermen, were removed from the village under police protection on Friday.

According to instructions from the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development, 40 fishing boats, fishing gear and about 80 fishermen were moved out from the village to calm the tense situation. Sources say the criminal act had been committed by encroaching fishermen from the Southern areas due to the ongoing fisheries dispute between the two groups.

Security has been strengthened while Police have also stepped up their patrols in the area following the incident.
