The Village in the Jungle (Baddegama)

Second Prize

The latest book that I read is Leonard Woolf’s The Village in the Jungle. I read its Sinhala translation named as Baddegama. It was translated into Sinhala by A. P. Gunerathne. I would like to share some of the story of the book.

It is a story about a hamlet close to Hambantota. The main characters are Silindu the village hunter, his two daughters named Punchi Menika and Hinni Hami and also Silindu’s sister Karlina Hami. The village ruler Babe Hami, his wife Nancho Hami and Pranandu merchant are some of the sub characters in the story.

The story is about how the village ruler along with the merchant sends Silindu and his son–in–law Babun to prison. Before that the villagers of Baddegama kill Hinni Hami brutally. After that Silindu kills the merchant and the ruler and he goes to prison. Read the book to find out more.
