Action against Group of 16, says Amaraweera

26 August, 2018

UPFA General Secretary and Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said the SLFP Central Committee is to discuss the action to be taken against the 16 SLFP members who recently quit the Government and aligned with the Joint Opposition (JO) if they continue to sabotage party activities by violating its constitution.

However, no final decision has been taken on these SLFP 16 MPs so far and most probably the party hierarchy will have to decide on the steps to be taken against them before the SLFP annual convention to be held in October, the Minister told the Sunday Observer yesterday.

Minister Amaraweera said as SLFP members if some SLFP MPs have directly or indirectly involved promoting any other political party, it is a clear violation of the party constitution so that the Party can definitely take action against them.

Meanwhile, another SLFP heavyweight in the Government told the Sunday Observer that the decision of 69 UPFA MPs in the Joint Opposition (JO) to quit the UPFA and become independent members in Parliament had to be reversed as they have cautioned that such a move will definitely result in losing their Parliamentary seats.

He said actually there is no 16 member group now because MPs like Dayasiri Jayasekara has categorically stated that he is not in the group while some others are also with the President. There are only a few MPs in the group who have their feet in both camps and resort to criticising the SLFP led by the President. They are trying to bring the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to power. As party organisers, most of these SLFP MPs in the 16 member group have done nothing in their electorates and districts to strengthen and they have worked to promote the SLPP.
