Kalinga Kumara to run 400m final today

Kalinga Kumara clocked a time of 46.53secs in the 400 metres semi final to booked a berth to run in the final scheduled to be held today at the Asian Games yesterday.

Kumara became the first Sri Lankan at the 2018 Asian Games to keep alive hopes of a medal for Sri Lanka and though he qualified to run in the final he has the lowest time to be the eighth to qualify. The race is to take place today 4.45 p.m. Sri Lanka time.

The other Sri Lankan Aruna Dharshana who had a better time of 45.99 secs in another heat failed to gain entry to the final. With the thentry of Kalinga to the final Sri Lanka will get an opportunity have hopes of a medal in a 400 metres after a lapse of 16 years.

Long Jumper Prasad Wimalasiri who leaped a distance of 7.56 meters was lucky to get the chance to compete in the final today along with 11 jumpers at 5.15 pm Sri Lanka time.

The medal hope in the 10,000 Hiruni Wijeratne failed to complete the event which was won by Kazakhstan’s Daria Maslova clocking32: 07.23secs.

The badminton pair of Sachin Dias and Buwaneka Gunetilleke playing in the last sixteen managed to defeat the Pakistani pair of Rizwan Azam and Sulehri Ali in straight sets 21-12, 21-13 to make their way to the last eight.

In the women’s Singles Kavindi Sirimanne went down to Tailand’s Nitchaon Jindapol also in straight sets.

Women basketballers playing their first game lost to Korea 21-8 but later came back well against Syria 21-8 and had to go out of the competition.

China defeated the Sri Lankan Spikers in a first round game 3 sets to 1.
