The ‘Colombo Defence Seminar - 2018’ Sri Lanka Army’s flagship symposium themed ‘Security in an Era of Global Disruptions’ was held this week at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Convention Hall. Held for the eighth consecutive year the seminar was inaugurated by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe who also delivered the keynote address.

In his speech, the Prime Minister noted that the nature of warfare is shifting from physical to online, due to the increased use of computers electromagnetic spectrum and artificial intelligence in commercial, economic, military and all other cutting-edge activities. “Technology Driven New Media is now becoming a Global Disruptive Force,” he said. The Prime Minister further noted that multinational cooperation in the issues related to national and international security is essential due to the complex nature of threats developing against humanity and mankind today.

A group of more than 115 worldwide security experts and nearly 800 service personnel, distinguished scholars and intellectuals attended the seminar to impart their knowledge on a number of serious threats faced by the world.

This year’s sessions, segmented into twelve productive sessions, were identified under the close supervision of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake including topics such as, extremism, climate change and future warfare and new media.
