The 18th edition of the Army Para Sports Committee organized athletic meet is to be held at the Diyagama Sports Complex from September 19 to 21. The opening ceremony will be held at 9.00 a.m with army Commander Lt. General Mahesh Senanayake as the chief guest.

These details were disclosed to the media by Army Para Sports Committee Chairman Chief of Staff Major General W.B.D.P. Fernando on Thursday. He paid a glowing tribute to Dialog for being the main sponsor for the fourth successive year and also thanked Amali Nanayakakra and Harsha Samaranayake for attending the press briefing representing the sponsor. Adding further he noted that these games are meant to raise the morale of soldiers who fought the war against the LTTE. “With the introduction of the Games our differently able soldiers are involved in many sporting activities. Their hidden talents brought good results and they reached qualifying standards to compete at international level. Competing in these international meets they brought glory to the country winning many medals”, he said.

This year’s meet has 72 individual events and 12 team sporting events classified under three major categories Differently Able, Visually Handicapped and Wheel Chair Sports.

The other major events organized by the Army Para Sports Committee are shooting, archery, badminton, table tennis, wheelchair tennis, power lifting, swimming and chess.
