Asian Volleyball Challenge : Sri Lanka triumph over Hong Kong

Sri Lanka made an auspicious start in their bid to win an Asian crown by beating Hong Kong comfortably by three sets to nil in their first game at the Asia Volleyball Challenge Cup played at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday afternoon. Sri Lanka took an early lead in the first set and maintained same to finish off in style with a ten point lead. In the second set Hong Kong were trying their best to make a strong effort to contain the local spikers from scoring at will. It was successful only until the half way mark which saw Sri Lanka lead 16-14. Sri Lanka finished off winners to take a 2-0 lead. The third set saw the Hong Kong spikers taking the lead for the first time in the match. They held on to a 12-9 lead until the halfway mark.

Sri Lanka got their act together after that and fought back gallantly to go past their opponents and be 16-15. The battle to take the lead continued and the Sri Lankans gave no room for the visitors to take the upper hand and finished winners on 25-23. The final scores were 25-15, 25-20, 25-23.

But before that President Maithripala Sirisena declared open the championship amid a large gathering.
