Basketball is loved by many throughout the world and in Sri Lanka. Therefore, Royal College and Gateway College have joined hands to conduct the second edition of the Alles-Gunasekera Trophy Basketball encounter with the intention of further popularizing the game throughout the schools.

This encounter is scheduled to be held on September 22 at Pedris Park courts. Malaysia’s Monash University has come forward to sponsor the encounter this year too.

“Basketball is not promoted up to expectations at School level. That was the main reason why Royal College and Gateway College joined hands to uplift it to higher level. It will also to educate the public about the sport.

When the proposal was mooted, the Principal of Royal College B.A. Abeyratne whole heartedly gave his consent to go ahead with the proposal last year”, said Dr. Harsha Alles Director of Gateway College.

The first encounter attracted a large crowd and was a real success with Royal College winning the Trophy. In Addition to the main encounter the girls school encounter between Ladies College and Gateway girls too will take place prior to the main game.

This year the Gateway team is led by Aaron Fonseka while Royal is skippered by Heshan Meethalawa. Under the captaincy of Heshan, Royal has won the Schools Basketball Championship 2018 and they are favoured to grab the title this year too.

The under 15 game is also on the cards to be played earlier in the day.
