Sri Lanka basketball team ends 11-year wait

The Sri Lanka men’s basketball team qualified to the next stage of the second round of the pre qualifier of the FIBA Asia Cup in Baharain last week.

Sri Lanka won their first match against Bangladesh and lost to Bahrain but qualified to the next stage in 2019.

The last time Sri Lanka qualified was in 2007.

During the qualifying tournament the Sri Lankans also played against Saudi Arabia and Palestine.

Experienced player of the Sri Lanka team Praneeth Udumalagala said the tournament was very important for exposure for us.

“In addition we already qualified to play in the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup and that is after 11 years”, said Udumalagala the former St Joseph’s College player who underwent a fine training course in the USA.
