Election Commission Members to observe Maldives Presidential Poll

23 September, 2018

Two members of Sri Lanka’s Election Commission left to Male to take part in monitoring the Maldives presidential election scheduled to be held today, a senior election official said.

Election Commission member Dr. Ratnajeevan Hoole and Additional Commissioner Rasika Peiris will join a team of polls monitors by Forum of Election Management Bodies of South Asia (FEMBoSA).

The official said all eight SAARC countries were members of FEMBoSA including Sri Lanka and Maldives and the visit is undertaken in that capacity.

However, it is reported that India is not taking part in the observer mission.

Sunday Observer learns that the observer mission is not being granted access to the Maldives’ opposition but rather being confined to polling booth visits. Meanwhile efforts were made to stop members of the Election Commission from travelling to Male as election observers, in case their independent observations caused a strain in ties between Sri Lanka and the neighbouring archipelago, Sunday Observer also learns.
