Esala Perahera

The Esala Perahera is held in Kandy every year. It is a very special event for Buddhists. King Wimaladharmasooriya started this beautiful and traditional procession. There are dancers, elephants dressed in colourful clothes and fireworks displays. After that the major event takes place. It is the elephant carrying the sacred tooth relic. When it arrives all the Buddhists stand up and worship. After the Devala perahera people throw coins on the road. It is a very important event which is performed praying for rain.
