Royal bag water polo title over Thomians

Royal College was able to take away the R.L. Hayman Trophy awarded at their annual water polo encounter against S. Thomas’ College at the second and final leg at the Sugathadasa stadium pool yesterday.

Having won the first leg 9-7 last week Royal beat the Thomians on the overall aggregate 16-15.

Yesterday’s game saw Royal take a 3-2 lead in the first quarter but failed to maintain the momentum in the second quarter and managed to collect only a single goal against two by Thomians. The third set was a real setback for Royal as the Thomians gained three with Royal taking only one goal.

The Thomina goal-keeper was at his best and made many saves to thwart Royal from scoring almost five goals. Royal came back strongly in the final quarter with the hope of reducing the lead but all their efforts failed as the Thomians eventually won 8-7.

The junior game was a complete dominance by the Thomians who won 18-4 with four quarters showing scores as 4-0, 5-1, 7-1 and 2-2.

The former S.Thomas’ College water polo captain of 1997 A.S. Perera was the chief guest at the second leg yesterday and presented the trophy to the winning team.
