Sangakkara tips England, blasts domestic set-up

Kumar Sangakkara has tipped England to do well on their tour of Sri Lanka saying they have the players to get on with the job and take care of pitch conditions away from home.

“England has a brilliant side to win in the sub-continent”,Sangakkara told ESPN cricinfo.

“They have balance, spin and an all-round side and can present a potent threat. It will also see if Sri Lanka can come out of situations like the Asia Cup and deliver results”.

Sangakkara like so many other retired Sri Lanka players also slammed the domestic inter-club tournament saying it was one of the reasons for the slump in standards.

Sri Lanka’s inter-club set-up has for years come under scrutiny for its lop-sided games where the composition of more teams have strangled the quality of play thereby not paving the way for top shelf players to come through a worthy system.

“At the same time Sri Lanka Cricket will have to go back and look at their first class structure. It needs overhauling and a better quality tournament and a new structure”, said Sangakkara.

Some experts say nothing is expected to change.
