SLFP Central Committee to meet this week

14 October, 2018

The SLFP Central Committee (CC) will meet on Tuesday, October 16 under the patronage of Party Leader President Maithripala Sirisena to discuss the progress of the party reorganisation drive and the current political scenario.

There is no specific topic to be discussed, but various proposals may be put forward at the CC meeting, SLFP General Secretary Prof. Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa told the Sunday Observer yesterday.

Asked whether any official discussion has been initiated within the SLFP to form a caretaker government in collaboration with the SLFP MPs in the Joint Opposition (JO), Prof. Piyadasa said no such discussion has been contemplated as yet. If party members are interested in it, they are at liberty to submit their proposals to the CC.

He said the SLFP has already set up 150 party organisations in the electorates and only another 20 have to be set up.

At present, the party is in the process of forming the SLFP Youth, women, teacher and farmer organisations and other affiliated bodies.

Steps have also been taken to set up branch organisations at village level. The party hierarchy has also discussed issues pertaining to electorates in the Northern and the Eastern provinces.

Prof. Piyadasa said the SLFP stand on the electoral process has already been conveyed to the Election Commission. Asked whether President Maithripala Sirisena and his predecessor Mahinda Rajapaksa met recently, the General Secretary said that he is not aware of such a meeting.

However, speculation is rife that official talks on forming a caretaker government will take place shortly between President Sirisena and former President Rajapaksa.
