US, EU urge Lankan parties to stick to constitution

28 October, 2018

The United States and the European Union on Saturday called on all parties in Sri Lanka to act in accordance with the Constitution, refrain from violence and follow due process after the National government fell apart and a new Prime Minister was sworn in by the President.

In a tweet, the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs of the US Department of State said it was following the events in Sri Lanka.

The Ambassador of the European Union as well as the Ambassadors of France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Romania and the UK High Commissioner too said they were closely following the events as they are unfolding in Sri Lanka. “We urge all parties to fully act in accordance with Sri Lanka’s constitution, to refrain from violence, to follow due institutional process, to respect the independence of institutions, and freedom of media,” they added.
