Free Riders SC introduces night cycle racing

Free Riders Cycling Club, Katana will conduct the first ever night cycling race in collaboration with the Gampaha District Cycling Association on November 24.

The event which is to commence at 8.00 pm will have three different categories, Open Racing for Elite riders men and and Under-18 boys standard event.

These details were disclosed at a media briefing held in Negombo on Wednesday by the Free Riders Sports Club Officials.

The race is to run on a circuit of six kilometers starting from Thibirigaskatuwa and finishing at the same point after completing the allotted number of laps for the events. The junior riders

are expected to cover a distance of 60 kms, Elite Women Riders 60 kms and Elite Men Racing Riders are to paddle for 16 laps covering 96 kilometers. The Open Elite Riders event will be packed with three sprints after 4 laps, 8 laps and 12 laps. The Organizers have obtained the clearance and blessings from the Cycling Federation of Sri Lanka and the Ministry of Sports for the event, said the president of the Club. He further added that this event has received a lot of enthusiasm from all sports followers and the business community.

“All members of Katana Pradeshiya irrespective of political differences too have joined to support the event”, said the president of the Club Brian de Silva.

Being the first ever night racing event the organizers expect a record number of entries from all parts of the country. The winners of all three events are to receive trophies and cash awards according to the organisers. The following are the awards on offer according to the organisers.

Under-18 winner Rs. 30,000, two runners-up 25,000, 20,000 and 5000 from fourth place to tenth position. The same cash award will apply to the women’s event while the Open Elite Riders event winner gets Rs. 60,000 and runners up 50,000 and 40,000 respectively.

In addition riders finishing up to 20th positions will also receive cash prizes. Entries are to be forwarded to Lalantha Fernando, Secretary, Free Riders Sports Club, 66, Pahala Kadirana, Thimbirgaskatuwa, on or before November 22.
