The 2018 film Adrift is directed by and produced by Baltasar Kormákur and the screenplay is by David Branson Smith and Aaron Kandell. It stars Shailene Woodley as Tami Oldham and Sam Claflin as Richard Sharp. It is based on a true story Red Sky in Mourning: A True Story of Love, Loss, and Survival at Sea by Tami Oldham Ashcraft.

The film begins in Tahiti with the depiction of a free spirited Oldham sailing and enjoying life. She meets a sailor Richard Sharp and they begin dating and eventually get engaged. Friends of Sharp ask him so sail their boat from Tahiti to San Diego and he agrees and Oldham accompanies him. Their boat is caught in hurricane Raymond in the South Pacific in 1983.

The film juxtaposes the past with the present and shows clips of the beginning of their journey and their struggle for survival during the storm. It tells the story of a calm beautiful ocean which becomes deadly during a storm.
