Dinesh set to be House Leader

Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) leader and United People’s Freedom Alliance Party (UPFA) parliamentarian Dinesh Gunawardena is all set to be the next Leader of the House.

This was made known yesterday by Government spokesperson MP Keheliya Rambukwella following its parliamentary group meeting led by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.

According to Rambukwella, all parties representing the Government unanimously agreed to the proposal. “All members of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and other parties who had expressed their support were agreeable to this decision,” and added that, however, the appointment of a Chief Government Whip had been postponed for a few days.

“However, we must stress that there is no tussle among the parties in the government regarding Cabinet or other appointments,” he said.

Rambukwella also refuted claims that Parliament would be convened on November 7. “As per the country’s Constitution only the President has the powers to convene or prorogue Parliament,” he said.

According to Rambukwella, the gazette stating the next parliamentary date as November 16 still stands. “If Parliament is to be reconvened prior to that only the President can do so,” he said, and added that it is a decision of the President alone and the Government has no need to call for Parliament to be convened at an earlier date.

Meanwhile, UPFA MP A.H.M. Fowzie was appointed as the State Minister of National Unity, Co-existence and Muslim Religious Affairs. He was sworn in before President Maithripala Sirisena at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday morning.

On Friday, UNP MP S.B. Nawinne was appointed as the Minister of Cultural Affairs, Internal Affairs and Regional Development while TNA MP S. Viyalendiran was sworn in as Deputy Minister of Regional Development (Eastern Development).
