UPFA will back dissolution if UNP wants it-MP Chandima Weerakkody

4 November, 2018

If the United National Party brings up a motion to dissolve the parliament, the United People’s Freedom Alliance would welcome and support such a move, UPFA MP Chandima Weerakkody told at an interview with the Sunday Observer.

Even though the UPFA doesn’t seek a parliamentary election immediately, if the majority wants an election the government is also ready for it, he said. “We also want to go for an election where people will be able to decide directly. But at the moment it’s not our priority” he said.

Meanwhile at a discussion last week with university academics, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa showed interest in going for a General Election if the UPFA budget is defeated.

“I will support the UNP to defeat the Budget. Then we can go for an election” he said.

Addressing a media briefing MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage said that the UPFA is ready to hold a massive rally near the Parliament to show the strength of the government tomorrow (05). “The Prime Minister has the majority in the Parliament and in the country.

“We are going to demonstrate it tomorrow at the parliament roundabout. Even though the UNP is trying hard to illustrate that they have the majority, we will show who has the majority at the next parliament day” he stated.
