World’s longest bridge set to open

The world’s longest bridge is set to open, years after it was scheduled to open.

The 55km long Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau bridge and tunnel will link Hong Kong to mainland China via Macau. From end to end, including its two link roads, the bridge is about 20 times the length of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. The structure is designed to withstand earthquakes and seasonal typhoons.

To allow ships to continue passing through the estuary, the bridge plunges into an underwater tunnel for 6.7km midway. Construction on the project began in 2009 and is thought to cost more than $27.7 billion. Buses and commercial vehicles will carry passengers and freight over the bridge. Local taxis are not allowed on it and only a few private cars will get permits to cross.
