The Human Rights Commission (HRC) has called for a meeting on November 13 with the Director of Education Anura Abeywardena, Examinations Commissioner and the Central Province Educational Director to discuss steps to be taken on schools that had prevented weak students sitting for examinations.
The Commission has initiated investigations into complaints against schools that had decided not to include weak children to face examinations.
A meeting in this regard was held with Education Director of the Central Province, Walapane Zonal Education Director and the Hatton Zonal Education Director last Friday at the Commission.
Ceylon Teacher’s Union Secretary Joseph Stalin told the Sunday Observer that the highest number of complaints was received from schools in estates. The Union had submitted a report on this issue to the Human Rights Commission on a previous occasion.
“This is an issue taking place in almost all areas of the country but the number is high among estate schools. The development of the education sector in an area is ascertained through the pass ratio in schools. This is a reason why schools have decided to discourage weak students from sitting exams,” Stalin said.
A separate committee had also been appointed by the Central Province Education Department to investigate into the matter, it was revealed at a meeting at the Commission.
