Kodagoda pride of Kandy
Nugawella Central College’s Imaya Kodagoda made the hill capital proud by being selected for the national side for the Asian under-18 rugby girls championship, which took place in India from October 26 to 28.
Sri Rahula cricket
Sri Rahula College, Katugastota is one of Kandy’s oldest cricket playing schools and this season they field a fresher-laden side with Madushanka Paranavithana as their captain.
Damakage is their coach who is going all-out to make the side a match winning team.
The old boys too give their best possible backing to keep the game going in the school. This season they have played only one game against Nugawella Central, which was drawn. The rest of the matches will resume in mid December after the examinations.
Side wickets from KDCA
Kandy District Cricket Association presented three side wickets on Friday. They presented four cement wickets with nets to schools like Mahamaya Girls College, St. Benedict’s College Ampitiya, Sidaratha Vidyalaya, Ampitiya and Bandaranaike Vidyalaya Kundasale. With this they have presented seven side wickets, which will help the young cricketers in a big way.
Shakir to coach DSS Kandy
Mohamed Shakir who played rugby for St Sylvester’s College in early 90s takes over as one of the coaches of D.S. Senanayake College Kandy, who are new to rugby. Earlier, this school was known as Senkadagala MV. He was earlier involved in junior coaching at Sri Sumangala College (St. Paul’s College). He played for the Kandy SC Lions for many years from 1995.
Trinity weightlifters shine
Trinity College’s weight lifters shone at the All-Island Schools Weightlifting Championship organized by the Sri Lanka Schools Weightlifting Power Lifting Strength Building Federation. The meet was held last month at M/Rajagiri Vidyalaya, Aranayake.
They pocketed nine gold, two silver and two bronze medals. The medal winners were Abidh Jameel (U-16, 56kg category), Missaka Wickramasekara (U-16, 85kg category), Yahadasun Ratnayake (U-16, 94kg category), Reshan Karawita (U-18, 69kg category), Esanda Bodhinarayana (U-18, 94kg category), S. Ladhushagar (U-18, 105kg category), Nadupa Jayakody (U-20, 62kg category), Kevin Gamage (U-20, 77kg category)and Prabash Jayasooriya (U-20, 105kg category) in the Gold category while the Silver winners were Malith Mayadunne (U-20, 69kg category)and Oshen Gunawardena (U-20, 85kg category). The Bronze winners were Shanna Kamburugamuwa (U-18, 62kg category) and Damien Tennakoon (U-20, 105+ kg category). Kevin Gamage was adjudged the Best Lifter.
Cops to promote sports
Kandy Police OIC Susantha Kumara Bulumulla is going all-out with the support of the SSP Division Sisira Kumara, DIG division D.R.L. Ranaweera and all substation OICs to promote sports. Kandy Police at one time enjoyed greater success in sports. In the early days Police dominated in sports like cricket, football, athletics, hockey, volleyball, billiards and snooker.
The most common sports are athletics, cricket, football, hockey, rugby, volleyball, TT, badminton, baseball, basketball and netball.
Gold for Seethadevi
Seethadevi Girls School won the gold medal in the under-14 hockey carnival held at the Vincent Dias Stadium in Badulla. The school under the guidance of M.A.M. Ashroff and N. Paranithatan beat Uva College 7-0 and drew with Visaka Vidyalaya. They received walk-overs from Southlands College and Sri Sangamitha Girls College from Galle. This three day tournament saw twenty five girls schools in action.
