Captain goes where coach fears

Suranga Lakmal, Sri Lanka’s captain for the second cricket Test against England that concluded in Pallekele, could be entitled to a bouquet for speaking the truth instead of side-stepping questions when asked about the pitch.

“We have asked for a pitch that favours the spinners and I think that’s basically what we have got here (in Pallekele).

“Because the pitch is a turner what we are talking about right now is playing just one fast bowler. Though we have not chosen the team yet, that decision will come late in the day,” Lakmal said on the eve of the match. His utterance was in stark contrast to coach Chandika Hathurusinghe who before the start of the England series took umbrage when a journalist asked him about the pitches.

“I can’t comment on that”, said Hathurusinghe implying that he could be booked by the International Cricket Council (ICC) which was investigating an allegation that a curator at the Galle stadium responsible for preparing the pitch had provided insider information to a betting agent that amounts to what is called match or spot fixing.
