Sarath Malalasekara: A journalist with a gentle disposition

25 November, 2018

He endearingly called everybody ‘my sweetheart’ and the next word that virtually came to his tongue was, ‘come my dear don’t worry’. It was a common vocabulary of the late Sarath Malalasekara.

He was a good gentleman, kind and helped everybody.

I have been associated with him over the past 30 years as a colleague Journalist and have never seen him angry. He was always in a happy mood.

Sarath was fully conversant in court reporting and most of the lawyers and Judges were his good friends. It was his habit in the morning before court proceedings began, to have a friendly chat with the lawyers.

Indeed, he was a flying pigeon between every courthouse at Hulftsdorp, from the Magistrate’s Court to the Appeal Court.

Sarath was a clever senior Court Reporter who never missed any of the important court cases. And throughout his long career as a senior Court Reporter he upheld his credibility.

Reporting court proceedings is a very tough job because even a little mistake could lead to contempt of court, but Sarath was a clever reporter who knew his job well. Sarath was also a good teacher to the young court reporters and did his best for them.

It is very difficult to find people of his calibre. Sarath was a good friend and a kind hearted person whose demise is an irreplaceable loss to journalism.

May he attain Nibana.
