Colombo Rubber Traders’ Association marks centenary

2 December, 2018

A postage stamp was launched and a rubber auction was held on November 27 to mark the 100th anniversary of the Colombo Rubber Traders’ Association (CRTA) of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, set up on November 27, 1918.

Plantation Industries Minister S. M. Chandrasena and Posts and Telecommunication Minister C. B. Ratnayake were the chief guests. “The CRTA and the auction system has stood the test of time, and we are thankful to the Ceylon Chamber and its visionary leaders, who converted a sub-committee of rubber to a stand alone association,” CRTA Chairman Amanda Weerasinghe said.

The centennial postage stamp launched by the Posts and Telecommunication Department was the first stamp launched in over 15 years to signify the trade. The previous one being the Rubber-Rice Pact Postage Stamp that was issued in 2002.

The centennial stamp represents the rubber industry, depicting composite partakers of the trade. The proceeds of the rubber auction will be used for the benefit of the rubber trade.
