Over 2,000 policemen were deployed in Colombo yesterday ahead of the upcoming festive season, the Police said.
According to Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara, the officers in civvies and uniforms will ensure public safety and road traffic control.
Gunasekara said the police will especially look out for pickpockets and fraudsters during the festive season.
He said policemen have been instructed to focus on the smooth flow of traffic and ease possible traffic congestions in Colombo and the suburbs.
IGP Pujith Jayasundara has instructed all police stations in the country to intensify security during the season, the media spokesman said.
Special operations to nab errant and drunken drivers will be conducted during the period, Gunasekara said.
“The Traffic Division has been advised to increase operations to prevent drunken driving and accidents,” he said.
He requested the public to use standard fireworks to avoid related accidents.
