Ethnogames training in Panadura

A training session on Ethnogames will be conducted at Somathilaka Witharana Indoor Stadium in Panadura on January 12 and 13 from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm in collaboration with the National Ethnosport Committee which is directly linked to World Ethnogames Confederation, Sri Lanka Unifight Federation, Traditional Kurash, Traditional Wrestling Committee and Sri Lanka Kotta Pora Committee.

The aim of the training is to popularise Ethnosports and Unifight events in Sri Lanka. Ethnosports consist of traditional martial arts, traditional wrestling and traditional folk games.

The ‘Combined World Ethnogames Confederation consists of different international traditional sports committees that annually organises international tournaments and programs.

The last world tournament had been held with the participation of 80 countries including Sri Lanka.

Veteran sportsman Uditha Peris has been nominated by the Combined Ethnosport International Committee’ to popularise the sport in the country. He has introduced several sports to the country as a pioneer in introducing Kotta Pora as an international sport.

The training program also aims at selecting prospective sportsmen and women for the Games along with coaches and referees in order to popularise these sports in the country.

Organisers also intend to train prospective personnel locally and internationally and to represent Sri Lanka in international tournaments in 2019.

Men and women between 35 kgs to 150 kgs who are interested in the program can register on January 12, 2019 before 9.00 am at the venue and those who have experience in any traditional martial art game, obstacle games and body building will have an added advantage.
