Kandy sink Navy with nine tries in 63-31 win

27 January, 2019

Kandy SC recorded the season’s highest tally when they outplayed a disorganized Navy SC team by 63 points to 31 in their second round match of the Dialog inter club League rugby championship at Nittawela yesterday.

Kandy scored as many as nine tries all of which were converted by full back Thilina Wijesinghe who contributed a record 38 points through four tries and all nine conversions.

Kandy took an early 14-0 and by half time stretched it to 28-14 as Navy replied with two tries scored by Buddhika Piyaratana and Mohamed Afzal.

But it was all one-way traffic in the second half as Navy missed their tackles and Kandy ran at will to score five more tries with Jason Dissanayake doing the honours with the last try.

Heshan Kalhara was another try-scorer for Kandy SC who were better organized in ball-play and stuck to a simple basic plan of moving the ball and players positioning themselves at the right time to keep the scoreboard moving.

Wijesinghe’s 38 points was the highest individual contribution in a match in recent season’s of inter-club rugby.

He ran at will each time he got the ball and made some splendid touchline conversions.

For Navy it was only Buddhika Piyaratana and Mohamed Afzal who were in play most of the time.
