Lady Gaga reveals heartbreaking story

27 January, 2019

With the Academy Awards looming, the focus is turning to 2018’s biggest cinematic releases and there’s no denying ‘A Star is born’ was perhaps one of the biggest box office smashes.

The music-led movie has been the talk of the town for months, both for Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s incredible acting and their stunning, emotionally-charged performances.

Not one person left the cinema dry-eyed during the film’s cinema run and now the leading lady has revealed the story behind one of the film’s most powerful scenes.

And it’s heartbreaking.

Fans of the film will know Gaga and Cooper filmed each performance scene live, adding an authenticity that’s often lacking in films where performances are pre-recorded.

It’s this preference to live-record that resulted in one of the movie’s most heart-wrenching scenes and Lady Gaga has revealed where she pulled her emotion from in a new featurette titled, ‘The Road to Stardom: Making a Star is born’, released last week.

The ‘Born This Way’ singer revealed how just before she was about to record ‘I’ll Never Love Again,’ she received the awful news that one of her best friends, Sonja Durham, had passed away from stage-four breast, brain and lung cancer.

‘I remember that day very unfondly, in a way. I actually left the set,’ Gaga said. Despite initial plans to delay the shoot, the singer decided to go ahead with filming, having consulted with Sonja’s husband to get his blessing. She then turned to the audience, telling them her performance would be a tribute to her dear friend.‘If you could help me today, and really think of not just Sonja but how it feels to lose someone, think of her husband maybe, for me,’ she told them.‘I think that energy will penetrate this room. I think she’ll hear it.’ And it is a very powerful scene. We know Sonja would be proud!
